Architecture professor conducts workshop at teaching conference

Submitted by Mick Charney

Mick Charney, associate professor of architecture, conducted the workshop, "Looking for Mr. Wright...and Finding Him on Facebook" at the 13th annual Pearson Learning Cite conference, April 10-13, in Orlando, Fla.

Charney demonstrated the educational potential inherent within otherwise much maligned social networking sites. His session described how a traditional recitation seminar had been redesigned to appeal to tech-savvy architecture majors who were asked to create a closed-network of personal pages assembled on Facebook and clustered around a public figure page for the renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Employing the full range of their digital dexterity skills, students were ultimately able to construct a large repository of interconnected, useful information that revealed the widely varied dimensions, both professional and personal, to one of the most elusive and enigmatic architectural geniuses of all time.

The Cite conferences bring together online learning program executives and higher education faculty and administrators to exchange information about digital learning strategies, best practices in online and blended courses, and educational innovations and insights in collaborative learning.
