Safety first: 2011 Fire Prevention Week coming to K-State Oct. 9-15

Submitted by Communications and Marketing

This year's theme of Fire Prevention Week at Kansas State University, "Protect Your Family From Fire," is an important message for individual families in the Manhattan community and the K-State family, according to Randy Slover, K-State's fire marshal.

"'Protect Your Family From Fire' is an appropriate Fire Prevention Week theme for our campus community since each individual's actions have a huge impact on fire and life safety for everyone," Slover said.

K-State will offer several special events during the week, which is Oct. 9-15.

Fire prevention events will be on the Manhattan campus from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 10, south of the Derby Dining Center, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, and Wednesday, Oct. 12, on the Bosco Plaza in front of the K-State Student Union. Activities will be at K-State Salina from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, east of the College Center.

Activities will include fire extinguisher training, distribution of educational materials, door prizes and fire-fighting apparatus displays and demonstrations. The Kansas Forestry Service will also have a Wildland Type VI fire engine on display, and kids can get a free fire hat.

The 2011 Fire Prevention Week at K-State is sponsored by K-State’s Division of Public Safety in conjunction with the Manhattan Fire Department, Kansas Fire Marshal's office and Kansas Forestry Service.
