Harrington presents on rural change in Kansas

Submitted by Lisa Harrington

Lisa M. Butler Harrington, professor of geography, presented an invited lecture May 19 at the University of Maribor in Slovenia.

Harrington addressed "Agricultural and Rural Change: The Case of Kansas, USA." She described rural conditions and concerns, factors related to change, and types of policy and rural programs, including the place of Kansas State University as a land-grant institution.

Harrington was in Slovenia on her second visit through a grant funded by the Public Research Agency of the Republic of Slovenia, "The impact of the New Development Paradigm of Agricultural Policy on Rural Development: Selected Case Studies from Slovenia, EU, and Kansas, USA, 2015-2016." The grant partially supports learning trips and collaboration by Harrington and Lučka Lorber, vice rector of the University of Maribor. Lorber will visit Kansas a second time in September.

In addition to the presentation and other activities, Harrington met with the university's rector and several other administrators in support of further connections between K-State and Maribor. The K-State Office of International Programs and the geography department helped provide funding for Harrington's travel.
