Kansas State University's online conflict resolution certificate program received the Outstanding Credit Program Award from the University Professional and Continuing Education Association, or UPCEA. The award was presented at the association's conference April 7-9 in San Diego, California.

The conflict resolution program, offered online as a graduate or undergraduate certificate, focuses on techniques to improve communication and gain a healthier understanding of conflict as a positive force for change.

"Conflict resolution complements any degree or career, drawing students from around the world and at all levels in their educational and professional development," said Terrie McCants, clinical associate professor of family studies and human services and conflict resolution program coordinator at K-State.

Since its inception in 2005, the program has helped students and professionals learn to resolve disputes wherever they occur, from the workplace, to the classroom, to communities locally and globally. It meets a growing educational need, with the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projecting a 14 percent growth rate for jobs in the conflict resolution field for 2008-2018.

"Many employers list conflict resolution in the top core competencies for the workplace in business, public and nonprofit sectors," McCants said.

To help students add conflict resolution expertise to their degree path, K-State launched the Conflict Resolution Summer Institute, scheduled for June 6-July 29. Students can complete an undergraduate certificate in conflict resolution on campus in Manhattan while staying on track to graduation.
