Understanding and mitigating gender bias in academia workshop
On Feb. 2, the K-State Office for the Advancement of Women in Science and Engineering, or KAWSE office, is hosting a series of events about gender bias in academia facilitated by Molly Carnes and Jennifer Sheridan from the Women in Science and Engineering Leadership Institute, or WISELI, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Women of K-State's Pathway to Leadership Committee and KAWSE are co-hosting a lunch from 10:30 a.m. to noon in the Alumni Center Ballroom C. Carnes will present "Bias to Opportunity" about the research on gender differences in leadership styles and how to turn those differences into opportunities for women. Lunch will be provided by Women of K-State. Space is limited to 80 participants. Please RSVP by 4 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26.
Carnes and Sheridan will lead the "Breaking the Bias Habit" workshop from 1-4 p.m. in the Alumni Center Ballroom C. The workshop has several main goals: describe the effect of implicit gender bias on women in science, technology, engineering and math disciplines, or STEM; introduce participants to how gender bias manifests in academic workplaces; and provide five strategies to reduce gender bias. Space is limited to 80 participants and is restricted to graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, faculty and administrators. Please RSVP by 4 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26.
Sheridan will lecture on "Understanding and Mitigating Gender Bias in Academia" from 7:30-8:30 p.m. in Hale Library's Hemisphere Room. This talk will cover the main ideas covered in the workshop. This event is open to the public.
