Functional Fitness Program: Exercise opportunity in research for the new year

Submitted by Cheyenne Becker

Recruitment for an undergraduate research study that involves exercise with adults age of 65 and older is open.

The Kinesiology Functional Intensity Training, or FIT, Lab has started the recruiting process for the Functional Fitness Program and is looking for participants. The exercises will involve weight lifting, body weight movements and aerobic conditioning that is performed at a relative high intensity. All exercises will be performed under the direction of two certified coaches experienced in training older adults and working with safe modifications for the exercises to insure adequate difficulty level for each individual.

A physical therapist is collaborating with the lab on the screening and components of the testing done in this study. The main goal of this study is to see if participants can improve their functional fitness via five physical function tests, and to see if their confidence in performing daily tasks and perceived difficulty of task correlate with physical improvements.

Starting this month, the study will test participants for eight weeks from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays in 4 Natatorium.

Certified coaches will lead group-based sessions that will incorporate a variety of time-efficient exercises — actual workouts will be 5-25 minutes. Learn new stretches and skills to improve your health and quality of life.

All participants must be cleared by their doctor and will receive a T-shirt and a free month of exercise classes upon completion of the program.

This project has been approved by the Kansas State University Institutional Review Board and assigned the protocol number 7882.
