Six panelists to discuss faith-based action

Submitted by Patrice Scott

A former school superintendent, three area clergy members, a social worker and an instructor emeritus will serve as panelists addressing faith-based action related to issues of social justice in the Manhattan community and beyond.

The discussion, "Justice and Mercy: The Nexus of Social Justice Education and Faith-Based Social Action," will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, in Hale Library's Hemisphere Room. It is part of the College of Education's Not Just a Year of Social Justice program founded by Linda P. Thurston, College of Education associate dean of research and graduate studies and Lydia E. Skeen chair.

"We are honored to have these thought leaders from the community discuss their perspectives on social justice education and action," Thurston said. "The event is part of our yearlong social justice education events in the College of Education. Students, faculty, staff and community members will have a chance to be part of the dialogue as participants and panelists discuss together these timely and important topics."

The panelists include State Senator Tom Hawk, the Rev. Patrick McLaughlin with the First United Methodist Church; the Rev. Caela Simmons Wood, First Congregational United Church of Christ; the Rev. Jonalu Johnstone, Unitarian Universalist Fellowship; Diane Clark, social worker with The Homestead, a ministry of Westview Community Church; and Susan Gerth; instructor emeritus from K-State's College of Engineering.
