National 4-H Week student feature: Brooke Jackson

Submitted by Katie Allen

For all members, present and past, 4-H will always hold a special place in their hearts. For these 4-H alumni, the program gave them important life skills that they plan to use for many years to come. Join K-State Research and Extension this week as we profile current students at Kansas State University who are former 4-H members, in celebration of National 4-H Week, Oct. 4-10.

Brooke Jackson, Arkansas City, Kansas, Cowley County

Throughout her 12 years as a Martha Washington 4-H Club member, Jackson always enjoyed helping younger members discover their own strengths and talents. Following graduation, this senior in elementary education at K-State hopes to pursue a career as a teacher, and she credits this discovery to the 4-H program and the opportunities it provided. 4-H has taught her many life skills, including responsibility and accountability.

"As you grow in 4-H, you take on more responsibilities with projects and offices," Jackson says. "The more you take on, the more responsible you have to be, and that means holding yourself accountable. Otherwise, you let people down. I use what I learned from 4-H to push myself to my full potential. I can honestly say that 4-H helped me in making my decision to pursue a degree in elementary education. It was through all of my projects and helping the younger members that I found that working with youth is something I am passionate about. I want to challenge them to be the best they can be."
