Procter reappointed as director of CECD

Submitted by April Mason

Dear Members of the Kansas State University Community,

It is with great pleasure that I announce the reappointment of Dr. David Procter as director of the Center for Engagement and Community Development, or CECD.

Since arriving at K-State in 1987, he has worked in partnership with communities across the state. He has worked on issues of school consolidation, community strategic planning, heritage museum education, facilitation of community dialogue and strategies for re-populating rural communities. In his role with CECD since 2006, Procter has worked closely with K-State Research and Extension, or KSRE, on community issues. He has pursued numerous engaged projects with K-State Research and Extension in teaching, research and outreach around KSRE's five grand challenges of Global Food Systems, Water, Health, Community Vitality and Developing Tomorrow's Leaders.

Most recently he spearheaded work with KSRE to facilitate public meetings across Kansas to help set goals for the Kansas Water Plan, charged by Gov. Brownback and the Kansas Department of Agriculture.

We are indebted to David Procter as he led the campus and community to achieve the Carnegie Foundation's "Community Engaged University" for Kansas State University. He has already begun chairing a group with Trish Gott from the Staley School of Leadership Studies to measure our effectiveness in this role at the midpoint of our membership helping to prepare for a reapplication in 2019.

Dr. Procter recently went through a very thorough and extremely positive five-year evaluation conducted by a review team. I agreed with their recommendation and was pleased to reappoint him to another five-year term as director.

Daryl Buchholz chaired the five-year evaluation committee and had this to say: "Dr. Procter, in his role as director of the Center for Engagement and Community Development, clearly shows enthusiasm, vision, commitment and a sense of purpose in seeing that Kansas State University fulfills its comprehensive land-grant university mission to include purposeful engagement with the people of Kansas, the nation and the world."

Dr. Buchholz has said it well. Please join me in congratulating Dr. Procter on his reappointment and his continued work as an outstanding leader at our university.
