Mathematics Colloquium lecture Feb. 10

Submitted by Reta McDermott

Tanmay Deshpande, University of Tokyo, will present "Algebraic Groups Over Finite Fields and Their Representations" as part of the Mathematics Department Colloquium lecture series at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, in 122 Cardwell Hall.

The abstract for the lecture is: Let k be the algebraic closure of a finite field and let G be any algebraic group over k equipped with a Frobenius F:G--->G. I will give an introduction to the theory of character sheaves which is a geometric approach to the character theory of the finite groups G^{F^m}. In the 1980's Lusztig developed such a theory for reductive groups and more recently Drinfeld and Boyarchenko have developed a theory for unipotent groups. I will describe an approach towards a theory of character sheaves on general algebraic groups.
