David Gustafson retires
David Gustafson, professor of computing and information sciences, retired at the end of January, closing 37 years of service to the department and university.
Gustafson earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from University of Minnesota and a Bachelor of Science in meteorology from University of Utah. He served in the U.S. Air Force for four and a half years, and went to University Wisconsin, Madison for his master's degree and doctoral degree in computer science.
When Gustafson began his career at K-State in 1977, the computing and information sciences department was in the College of Arts & Sciences in Fairchild Hall. Paul Fisher was department head.
"Dave has been a fixture in CIS almost 40 years," said Scott Deloach, interim department head. "His fingerprints are everywhere from our software engineering courses and programs, to many highly successful robotic teams and our graduate program in general. To say he will be missed is an understatement."
Gustafson is a member of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Association for Computing Machinery, Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence and Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society.
Gustafson was named by the Ad Astra Kansas Initiative as one of the top 150 scientists ever to work in Kansas.
