Kansas Board of Regents Nov. 19 meeting

Provost and Senior Vice President April Mason presented the proposed honorary doctorate to the board.

The monthly Kansas Board of Regents meeting on Nov. 19 included a few items related to Kansas State University.

Students' Advisory Committee

The Students' Advisory Committee, chaired by K-State's Student Body President Reagan Kays, opposed proposed changes to Kansas Statute 76-742: Student fees for debt service on academic or health facilities. The committee advocates for student participation with any proposed changes. The Regents later denied proposed changes during discussion of non-budgetary legislative issues.

Standing Committee Reports — Governance

Regent Kenny Wilk and the Governance Standing Committee commended Kansas State University's security report. Wilk also gave positive feedback on K-State's new safety app, called LiveSafe.

Consent Agenda

The Board of Regents approved a new Master of Science in personal financial planning at Kansas State University.

The board approved an amendment of the fiscal year 2016 Capital Improvements Plan and the architectural program statement for a new geosciences facility. The approval of the program statement will allow the university to proceed with fundraising and planning of the new facility.

Fiscal Affairs and Audit

The board gave a first reading of proposed housing and food service rate increases at each university. The regents will vote on the rates in December.

Honorary doctorate

The board approved Kansas State University's request to present an honorary doctorate to Wayne Freeman, a 1938 alumnus and a world agricultural scientist. Provost and Senior Vice President April Mason presented the request for the honorary doctorate to the board. Freeman will be honored at the university's Graduate School commencement on Friday, Dec. 12.
