Logan awarded faculty continuing education grant

Submitted by Mary Rankin

Tom Logan, associate professor and Hutton family distinguished faculty in construction science, has been awarded a $2,500 faculty continuing education grant from the Mechanical Contracting Education and Research Foundation. The grant is a supplement to his work this summer as a job-site project manager for Alexander Mechanical Contractors on the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility central utility plant on the Kansas State University campus.

Logan was one of four faculty members across the U.S. selected for the grant, which provides salary support to faculty who work for a Mechanical Contractors Association of America member company. The award recognizes that a contractor may not choose to pay the going rate for a faculty member who may not have as much experience as someone still working for the contractor.

"The intent is to provide faculty with additional firsthand experience," Logan said. "I had 20 years mechanical construction experience prior to coming to Kansas State, but that was 14 years ago. This was a great opportunity to see the construction process, interact with trade and construction professionals, and learn about new ways of doing things."

Logan also is faculty adviser for the student chapter of the Mechanical Contractors Association of America on campus. This group was awarded a $3,000 developing chapter grant from the Mechanical Contracting Education and Research Foundation to help fund its chapter.

"We have a fairly new chapter — only about 5 years old," Logan said. "The grant will help us pay for costs associated with tours, meetings and travel to attend the national convention in March and the student summit in October."

The K-State student chapter also received an additional $3,000 support grant from the Mechanical Contractors Association of Kansas City.
