NACADA to present webcast on effective advising and student engagement

Submitted by Dr. Michael Lynch

Relational skills are essential for every academic advising encounter, whether individual, group, or virtual in nature. Though critical to a successful advising experience, relational skills are often last to be formally taught in the field of academic advising.

The National Academic Advising Association will present the next webcast in their series on effective advising. The webcast is titled "The Relational Component of Academic Advising: Strategies for Effective Communication, Rapport Building and Student Engagement." The webcast will be presented at 1 p.m. today in Room 213 of the K-State Student Union.

Peggy Jordan of Oklahoma City Community College and Katie Beres of Saint Louis University will introduce topics on self awareness, boundary setting, difficult conversations, talking with emotional students, special populations of students, and giving referrals.
