John O. Smyers

Advisor: Dr. Richard Harris

Description of Research

My primary research interests include: language (specifically, abstract and figurative language), bilingualism, implicit testing and assessment, memory, mass media and metacognition. My current research is focused on Social Movie Quoting (SMQ) in the context of Speech Act Theory. Who participates in SMQ? What type of discourse goals are accomplished through SMQ? How does SMQ compare to traditional types of language figuration? How is SMQ unique?
