The monotypic genus Defretinella Hennere, 1966 is characterizated
by oocysts containing >50 bivalved sporocysts, each
sporocyst with numerous sporozoites. Because of the bivalved nature
of the sporocysts, Levine (1983) placed this genus in close proximity to
Barroussia and Goussia (Eimeria). Additional studies
are warranted to determine whether
this coccidian should remain aligned with the other Eimeriidae.
