Mark Mayfield, research assistant professor of biology at Kansas State University, is K-State's plant identification expert. Mayfield works at K-State's herbarium, which contains more than 185,000 species of plants and seeds, most of which date back as far as the late 1880s.

Prior to joining K-State in August 2000, Mayfield was associate director of the herbarium at Louisiana State University.

He received his bachelor's degree in biology in 1987 from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, and a doctorate degree in botany in 1997 from the University of Texas at Austin.
