A quick look at recycling and sustainability efforts across the K-State campus:

•  The department of environmental health and safety is seeing that incandescent light bulbs are replaced with compact flourescent bulbs. The department recycles used compact flourescent bulbs.

•  Housing and dining services coordinates energy-saving projects that strive to save nearly $2 million in energy in four years, reducing the amount of fossil fuels needed to produce electicity, gas and steam.

• Housing and dining services also has a pilot program for recycling at the residence halls. Recycling centers outside the Derby Complex are for paper, plastic and aluminum. Centers at the other two complexes will be added in the fall.  News paper is recycled in all the first floor residence hall and dining center lobbies.

• Moreover, housing and dining services uses "green" cleaning chemicals for housekeeping activities, and all of carpet is 100 percent recyclable as are many of other products.

• In one year, printing services recycled 110,354 pounds of paper, 4,625 pounds of cardboard and 2,235 pounds of aluminum.

• The Konza Environmental Education Program has been recycling paper, plastic, glass and aluminum since 1997. They reuse the back of used letter-sized paper for many things before it goes to the recycle bin.

• The Jardine Apartment retail area, scheduled to open in 2010, is being designed with sustainability in mind.

• Busnhnell Hall has had a self-supported recycling program for the 18 years.

• Scientists in the Division of Biology work to properly dispose of chemicals, recycle batteries and any other recyclable materials in their laboratories.
