Timeline and funding
The Kansas Legislative Research Department delineated the NBAF timeline with funding summary (1996-2015). The $1.25 billion funding for NBAF included $307 million from the State of Kansas and $5 million from the City of Manhattan. The 25% contribution to the total cost of NBAF highlights the unique federal/state/local partnership developed to protect America from global biological threats to livestock (our food supply) and people. With the final federal commitment of $300 million in FY2015, NBAF laboratory construction began.
The overall NBAF timeline – including site selection, construction, and projected future milestones3 – is depicted below.
The SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic has highlighted the importance of facilities like NBAF to confront emerging infectious disease threats.
