Music Education Philosophy

A main role of education is to develop well-rounded and knowledgeable individuals in society. They need to be able to strive for high achievement, learn to respect themselves and the peers around them, learn how to create a positive environment over a negative, and knowledge based information that will help them later in life. Music Education is a way for students to learn all of these concepts.

As an educator, I believe that students need to be in an environment where they feel safe and comfortable to grow as a person. A student needs to have a place where they can discover, create, learn, and even make mistakes. When they have the place to experience learning then they have a higher chance in becoming well-rounded individuals.

One of the main ways we as teachers can create an environment of learning is to develop a space of student-centered learning. By having a student-centered classroom, students can become more engaged, inspired, creative, and encouraged to learn. It gives them the chance to be open-minded and to decide what is important to learn besides the teacher spoon-feeding information to them. The students will be able to show these roles by being able to create and discover the different aspects of music. We need to challenge our students and ourselves to create lessons and opportunities that will encourage students to take learning in their own hands.

Music education can help teach students of the qualities that they need to be successful throughout their life. By participating in the music making process, students get to be able to be creative within a group and individually, develop teamwork skills, learn about work ethic and dedication, and it gives students the opportunity to express themselves in ways that other subjects cannot. Within music education, students take the responsibility of multiple roles within the classroom. The roles consist of the students becoming the follower and the leader, the inventor, the historian, and the teacher.

Music education is an important subject that can easily incorporate diverse learners within the classroom. With the different areas of music, students are able experience music with each other no matter what kind of learner they are. Being apart of a choir or band, can give a student a sense of community that can help students learn and create music together. The students learn how to work together as a team and encourage each other during the process. It helps set up an atmosphere for all students within the classroom to create an environment where they can grow musically together.

As a music educator, it is my job to help create learning and to set students up for success in society. Through music, I will help students develop the disciplines that they need to succeed in life and to explore the many benefits that music has to offer.
