Flute Techniques
1.The flute repertoire (that has been notated) spans more than 400 years.
2.When selecting solo music for your students, one size does not fit all. Some students are able to hit high notes better than others. Some students are better at technical pieces than lyrical. Take the time to customize solo literature for each student.
3.Don’t bother with transcriptions. Use music that was originally written for flute.
4.I like for students to play music from the most notable composers so that they can remember which styles they should play for each composer/period. However, I do not recommend for middle and high schoolers to play flute masterworks. These are pieces that they will study in college and if they study it too young, they will have bad habits engrained in their muscle and brain memories. Especially stay away from Bach and Mozart.

“Teaching music is not my main purpose. I want to make good citizens. If children hear fine music from the day of their birth and learn to play it, they develop sensitivity, discipline, and endurance. They get a beautiful heart.”
