MANHATTAN -- Stephen L. Wolgast, news design editor for the New York Times, has been named the new adviser to Kansas State University's student newspaper, the K-State Collegian. Wolgast also will serve as an instructor of journalism and digital media in K-State's A.Q. Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communications.

Steve Wolgast"Coming from one of the most prestigious media organizations in the world, Wolgast's knowledge of digital reporting, photography and design will have a major impact on our program," said Angela Powers, director of the A.Q. "He is well aware of our strengths, having served on the school's Advisory Council since 2005, and will bring a fresh approach to news reporting."

Wolgast also will serve as associate director of K-State's Student Publications Inc. and will teach courses in editing, design, photojournalism, Web news and news writing.

A K-State alum, Wolgast worked at the Times for almost nine years and was named the newspaper's first advance layout editor in 2006. Before joining the Times in 2000, Wolgast was a lecturer at the University of Akron in Ohio; wire and design editor in Casper, Wyo.; and had international experience as a reporter in Tallinn, Estonia.

"Our program has a legacy of affiliations with the New York Times," Powers said. "Since 2004, we have hired three people including Wolgast; Fred Brock, the R.M. Seaton Professional Chair in Journalism; and Kimetris Baltrip, assistant professor and former Collegian adviser."

Wolgast's appointment begins July 1.
