A cultural start to the new year: University performances warm up January

MANHATTAN -- The first month of the new year will be full of music, art, performances and more at Kansas State University.

The following events in January 2013, all free unless otherwise indicated, are sponsored by the university's McCain Performance Series; the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance; and the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art. They include:

* The exhibition "Inadvertent Arson: Paintings and Drawings by Patrick Duegaw" runs through Jan. 13 at the Beach Museum of Art. The latest installment in Duegaw's "Painted Theater Project," the exhibition was conceived as a theatrical performance and incorporates painted portraits, props and sets as surrogates for living actors, 3-D objects and a stage. Duegaw is a Kansas State University alumnus.

* The exhibition "Konza: Sculpture by John Douglas Powers" is on display through July 2013 at the Beach Museum of Art. Powers' kinetic sculpture, which evokes the Konza Prairie near Manhattan, is constructed from brass, aluminum and stainless steel.

* It's Homeschool Tuesday at the Beach Museum Art from 1-2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8. Come explore the university collections in "The Museum of Wonder" exhibition. Classes, which are split by age, cost $3 per child, or $1.50 for Friends of the Beach Museum of Art members. Reservations are required; call 785-532-7718 or email klwalk@k-state.edu. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Cancellation notice is requested to serve those on the waiting list.

* The 40th annual String Fling will be Jan. 19-20. More than 600 violin, viola, cello and bass students in grades 5-9 from across Kansas will take part in a weekend of music-making. String Fling is directed by David Littrell, distinguished professor of music. The student concerts, divided by grade level, will be at 10 and 11 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, in McCain.

* The Beach Museum of Art will celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day with the Martin Luther King "Day On" Open House from 10 a.m.-noon Monday, Jan. 21. The event will feature photographs by Kansas artist Gordon Parks, taken in the Manhattan area, from the collections of the Beach Museum of Art and the Manhattan Arts Center. The open house is free but a donation for the Flint Hills Breadbasket is requested.

* The American Guild of Organists and Manhattan Area Music Teachers Association will sponsor an organ and piano recital at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, in All Faiths Chapel. The concert features faculty, guest and student artists.

* The annual Concert Band Clinic will be Jan. 25-27 in the McCain music wing and All Faiths Chapel, with a 1 p.m. concert Sunday, Jan. 27, in McCain Auditorium. This three-day event includes six large ensembles, percussion ensembles, sectional rehearsals and master classes with the university's music faculty. The clinic is coordinated by Frank Tracz, director of bands and professor of music, and Don Linn, assistant director of bands and instructor of music, and band student staff, with guest conductors from around the country.

* The upcoming 100th birthday of civil rights movement pioneer Rosa Parks will be celebrated at the Beach Museum from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, in the UMB Theatre with a free screening of the Emmy-nominated movie "The Rosa Parks Story." The film stars Angela Bassett and was directed by noted filmmaker Julie Dash. Brief discussions will precede and follow the film.

* A recital by guest countertenor Chad Payton and his professional ensemble, Payton and the Pipes, will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, in All Faiths Chapel. The ensemble features countertenor, clarinet and flute. Payton is an assistant professor of music at Delta State University in Cleveland, Miss.

* ARTSmart classes for children will be offered the week of Jan. 29-Feb. 1. This month's offering, "Museum of Wonder," lets children explore the wonder and variety of the visual world through the university's many collections. Classes will integrate art, science, language arts, math and history, and help develop critical-thinking skills. Classes are age appropriate. The class schedule is: all ages, 4:15-5:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, and Wednesday, Jan. 30; toddlers and 2-year-olds, 10:30-11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30; 2- and 3-year-olds, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 31; school-age kids, kindergarten and up, 4:15-5:15 on Jan. 31; and 4- and 5-year olds, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 1. Classes cost $3 per child, or $1.50 for Friends of the Beach Museum of Art members. Reservations are required; call 785-532-7718 or email klwalk@k-state.edu. Children must be accompanied by an adult. * Voice students of Amy Rosine, assistant professor of music, will perform a studio recital in All Faiths Chapel at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29.

* The multiple Tony Award-winning Broadway hit "A Chorus Line" comes to McCain Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29. Tickets cost $22.50-$55 with applicable taxes and fees, and can be purchased at the McCain Auditorium box office, calling 785-532-6428, or online at http://www.k-state.edu/mccain/. This show is recommended for ages 14 and up.

* Come alone, bring a friend or make it a date night at the Beach Museum's Valentines Workshop for Adults from 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31. The museum will supply all the supplies needed to make valentines. The cost is $10 per person, or $7.50 for Friends of the Beach Museum members. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 785-532-7718.

* Faculty artist Paul Hunt, professor of music, will perform a trombone recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, in All Faiths Chapel.
