THREE K-STATE STUDENTS RECEIVE GREATER CHICAGO CLUB MANAGERS ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIPS

MANHATTAN -- A strong interest in careers in the hospitality industry -- particularly in the private club industry -- has earned three Kansas State University students scholarships from the Chicago Club Managers Foundation and Great Chicago Club Managers Association.

Applicants for the scholarships had to include their college transcript, resume and an essay that, among other points, explained their interest in the private club industry, what their definition of the word "hospitality" is and their previous experiences in the hospitality industry.

"The competition had 11 applicants from across the U.S., with three of the awards were won by K-State students," said Deborah Canter, head of K-State's department of hospitality management and dietetics. "We are so excited for this recognition of our K-State students. These young women are representative of the dynamic students who are enrolled in our hotel and restaurant management program. These kinds of awards also reflect the mentoring students receive from our faculty."

K-State students receiving scholarships, all hotel and restaurant management majors, and their scholarship amount, include: Samantha Ellison, senior, Derby, $3,000; Bailey Miller, junior in hotel and restaurant management, Maple Hill, $2,000; and Dominka Guerra, senior in hotel and restaurant management, Orland Park, Ill., $5,000.

All applicants had to be seeking an associate or bachelor's degree in hospitality management. Scholarships awarded ranged from $500 to $5,000.

The Chicago Club Managers Association is a chapter of the Club Managers Association of America, the professional association for managers of membership clubs. The association's nearly 7,000 members run more than 3,000 country, golf, city, athletic, faculty, yacht, town and military clubs. The association promotes and advances friendly relations among people connected with the management of clubs and other associations of similar character; encourages the education and advancement of its members; and assists club officers and members, through their managers, to secure the utmost in efficient and successful operations.
