Join the KSUnite conversations: Multicultural center update

Submitted by Bryan Samuel

Many people often define diversity and multiculturalism as representing a variety of races and ethnicities within a campus environment. But diversity and multiculturalism are so much broader than race alone (Anderson and Hall, 2015). As recent protests on campuses around the nation have moved institutions to make sweeping changes to campus climate issues, the role of culture centers is — and will be — at the forefront of many current and upcoming conversations (Somashekhar, 2015; "The Demands," 2016).

Since the inaugural KSUnite event last fall, a universitywide team was tasked to turn ideas and thoughts about a multicultural center into action. As announced last week, K-State has made significant progress toward bringing the center to campus.

Come and hear updates from student members of the Multicultural Center Project Action Team during a KSUnite breakout session at 3 p.m. Oct. 9 in Forum Hall at the K-State Student Union. The students and Adrian Rodriguez, associate vice president for diversity and multicultural student affairs, will talk about their committee's work toward making the multicultural center a reality and their resulting recommendations.

Please plan to attend the conversations and KSUnite program tomorrow. A full schedule of the day's events is available on the KSUnite website.
