KSU Amateur Radio Club Minutes

Minutes - October 7, 1997

The meeting came to order at about 7:12 P.M., under the auspices of President Kurt Zoglmann, KBØTMQ.

Norm Dillman, NØJCC, adviser, announced that he has acquired some license preparation books for the no-code technician exams. He has both the ARRL Q & A Manual and Now You're Talking, by the ARRL.

Norm proposed, and we agreed, that we should take advantage of a kiosk in Rathbone Hall to announce our meetings a day or so in advance.

Norm reported that the idea of rebroadcasting audio (and possibly video) from future NASA shuttle missions had not been completed. There are both technical and regulatory issues to be resolved before this could be done, and at this point, the project is more or less tabled.

Bill Kuhn, KO4MH summarized a proposed law that is now in committee in Congress. The law would effectively outlaw monitoring of most non-broadcast signals throughout the radio spectrum. This would not involve amateur radio bands, but almost everything else, and would certainly affect shortwave listeners and public service monitoring. Since most modern amateur radio equipment is capable of receiving at least some out-of-band signals, there could be major implications for currently-owned equipment.

It was agreed that some of us would convene at Seaton Hall at 1 P.M. on Sunday, Oct. 12 to throw out some junk, mount an antenna or two, and do a wee bit of housekeeping.

David Yoder, KAØJPM moved to purchase two supply cabinets to neatly store some of the treasures and debris currently strewn about the weapons room. These devices would cost $79.96 each. The motion was amended to purchase up to six cabinets, and it passed. It looks like we'll be conservative and stop at two cabinets.

Michael Mauldin was a guest who was marketing for a local T-shirt establishment. No action was taken.

David Yoder, KAØJPM
