History of Host Plant Resistance at Kansas State University


Kansas State holds the distinction of being the home for plant resistance to insects research in the United States.  Beginning with the arrival of Painter to our campus and, more recently, with the active participation of faculty members in IPRI, Kansas State has made many significant contributions to crop plants that are resistant to insects.

Below is the sequence of events documenting the contributions made by K-state.

1926 Reginald Painter came to K-State
1928 Release of Atlas Sorgo sorghum resistant to chinch bugs
1931 Release of Kawvale wheat resistant to Hessian fly
1937 First course in plant resistance to insects taught by Painter
1951 Painters's book, "Insect Resistance to Crop Plants" published
1966 Four week intensive training course for about 25 USDA entomologists:  
   talks presented by Painter, Maxwell, Beck, Heyne, Guthrie, Dicke.
1986 IPRI meeting, Manhattan KS, in celebration of the 60th anniversary of Painter's arrival in Manhattan
1989 2nd "Plant Resistance to Insects" text published by K-State entomologist Mike Smith.
1994 Plant Resistance to Pests listserv initiated at K-State
1995 Painter Memorial Reprint Collection computerized
1995 John Reese and Mike Smith assume co-editorship of the International Plant Resistance to Insects Newsletter
1996 Painter collection put on WWW and made searchable
