Table of Contents, List of Figures, and List of Tables - Word for Mac 2011

The Table of Contents, List of Figures, and List of Tables are referred to as “fields” and are automatically generated by Word. When you first open the template, these fields reflect the content of the sample pages. As you add your text, tables, and figures, you must update these fields to reflect the new content.

To update the Table of Contents, List of Figures, or List of Tables:

  1. Place your cursor anywhere within the Table of Contents, List of Figures, or List of Tables.
  2. Right click. How you do this will vary among Mac models, but for all models you can hold down the Ctrl key and click the mouse.
  3. In the menu that appears, click Update Field.
  4. If another window appears, select Update entire table.
  5. Click OK.

Table of Contents

The Table of Contents is configured to display text with the following styles:

  • Page Heading TOC
  • Chapter 1 – Heading 1
  • Heading 2
  • Heading 3
  • Appendix A – Heading 6
  • Heading 7
  • Heading 8

Do not make changes to the text or page numbers directly in the Table of Contents. If you need to add or delete elements within the Table of Contents, contact the IT Service Desk (Search the Knowledge Base, Submit a Ticket, or Start a Live Chat) for assistance.

List of Figures and List of Tables

The List of Figures and List of Tables are automatically generated from figure and table captions in your document. In order to have this process work correctly, you must insert the captions in a specific way. See instructions in the Captions section for details.
