ENGL 805: Practicum in Teaching

2nd Year GTAs

Policy Statement and Course Schedule -- Fall 2003

• Provide a copy of your policy statement and course plan to your advisor
• Arrange for your class to be observed
  • Be observed by Dave or Karin as soon as possible. (Note: Former GTAs have found that these reports become valuable references in their professional portfolios.)
  • Be observed by a peer by midterm. After the observation, complete the "Peer Review Report Form," and make a xerox of the form, submitting both copies to your advisor. (One copy will go into your teaching file and the other copy will go into the peer coach's file.)
• Have a file-review conference
  • As soon as possible during the first half of the fall semester, compile one set of graded essays (including all student's revisions, preferably with your comments on both an early and a revised draft), and review this set with your advisor.
• Plan on assembling a teaching/professional portfolio by 31 March 2004
  • Begin composing a C.V./resume and Statement of Teaching Philosophy
  • Begin collecting a variety of materials for your teaching portfolio
• Contribute a teaching strategy or classroom activity to first-year teachers
• Provide sample essays (A-F) for grading sessions
• Attend all meetings
  • If illness or an unavoidable conflict prevents you from attending a meeting, please give one of us a written explanation of your absence. Chronic absence will be noted in your departmental teaching file.
