Registration open! Graduate Student Welcome and Orientation Activities

The Graduate School looks forward to welcoming graduate students for Fall 2021! To help new students have a successful start to their graduate career, we are planning several activities in July and August. Below is a summary of activities. We are promoting directly to new and returning students but appreciate programs also sharing this information with your students. Please visit the Graduate School orientation webpage for more details.

Getting Started in Grad
July 20 and August 4 (Zoom)
This session will address logistics and procedures to help you launch your graduate career at K-State, covering topics such as the role of the Graduate School; enrolling in courses; tuition, fees, and billing; technology access; communication and parking.

You’re Hired! Expectations, Payroll, and Benefits for New GTAs, GRAs, and GAs
July 20 and August 4 (Zoom)
This session will address general assistantship expectations, enrolling in GTA/GRA/GA health insurance, other benefits for graduate assistants, work hours, and paycheck information.

Graduate Student Experience Welcome Session
August 18 (in-person and Zoom)
New and returning graduate students will receive guidance to facilitate a successful and fulfilling graduate student experience. Through presentations and a panel discussion with current graduate students and faculty, we'll address keys to academic success, opportunities for professional development, and resources to support personal well-being. Attendees will also build new connections through interactive activities.

Orientation for New Graduate Teaching Assistants
August 19 (in-person and Zoom)
This session will include an introduction from Dr. Tanya Gonzalez, Acting Director of the Teaching and Learning Center (TLC); GTA expectations presented by Dr. Don Saucier, Faculty Associate Director of the TLC; a panel discussion with current GTAs; and a presentation on services provided by the Office of Student Life.

Graduate Applications Processing

The deadline for departments to recommend admission for international applicants for Spring 2022 is September 1, 2021 for individuals who are living outside of the United States or for applicants who are currently enrolled at an institution in the United States who plan to travel outside of the USA prior to January 2022. The deadline to recommend those who are currently in the USA and do not plan on traveling outside the USA is October 1, 2021.

Explore Graduate School exit survey results 

The Graduate School has summarized responses to the graduate student exit survey for the last five years. All graduate students are encouraged to complete the survey upon graduation. You are invited to view the master summary of exit survey responses. Additionally, we are sharing college-level summaries with respective deans and associate deans and will share program-level reports with programs scheduled to complete KBOR Program Review Reports, programs scheduled for mid-cycle reviews, and programs undergoing external accreditation.

Understanding Application Criteria to Make Better Admissions Decisions - ETS webinar

Graduate admissions programs need to make swift determinations about complete strangers with limited information. In this session, you’ll learn the purpose and benefits of various components of the application packet, as well as strategies for mitigating drawbacks of each component to create a holistic, equitable process that works. Offered by ETS, join John Augusto, Associate Dean of Strategic Initiatives at Georgia State University, for this webinar on July 22, 11:00am-12:30pm. Register to attend.

This newsletter is distributed to department heads, graduate program directors, graduate program contact staff, and graduate faculty. Graduate students receive a weekly email on Mondays from the Graduate Student Council. Information about student events and opportunities are also shared here to keep graduate program administrators, faculty, and staff informed.
