Keynote Speaker: Jaime Carias
Jaime is a leading urban educator, author and national keynote speaker who is well known for his ability to inspire and educate students of all ages from middle school to college, coach educators and engage parents. Jaime is the civic engagement coordinator at the University of Southern California Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism where he leads servicelearning programming and designs strategic partnerships with the communities surrounding USC. In addition, Jaime is a Fellow at the USC Annenberg Center for Third Space Thinking where he leads the development of curricula aimed at developing ACE-IT skills among youth from underrepresented communities, first-generation undergraduate and graduate college students, along with leading professional development seminars for educators on how to foster ACE-IT skills among the students and communities they serve. Jaime has designed and implemented programming and curriculum for students, parents and educators in over 30 states across the United States. His research interests include fostering social emotional support in first-generation low-income students, student and parent resiliency, developing a growth mindset in students and parents, and college access. He is the author of two books: Project GRIT: Generating Resilience to Inspire Transformation (2015) and Accomplishing Success: Supporting Our Children with The Power of Culture (Buscando Vida, Encontrando Éxito: La Fuerza de La Cultura Latina en la Educación) (2016). Jaime was born and raised in the low-income community of South Central Los Angeles to Guatemalan immigrant parents and has dedicated his entire career to helping young people and parents seek better opportunities in school and in life. He has been featured on several national and local media outlets for his work developing educational and community-engaging programs aimed at creating access to higher education and empowering underserved communities across the country like his. Jaime earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of California, Santa Barbara and a Master of Public Policy (M.P.P.) from the USC Sol Price School of Public Policy.
