Protocols Reviewed
Title: “Development of broad spectrum antiviral drugs against DNA viruses and single-stranded, positive-sense RNA viruses”
NIH Guidelines: Section III-D-1-a and Appendix G-II-B-2.
Meeting Comments: The research group intends to continue developing broad-spectrum antiviral drugs against RNA and DNA, by evaluating protease inhibitors and investigating factors involved in viral replication. The project does not meet DURC/P3CO criteria, and appropriate biosafety procedures and mitigation plans are in place.
- Please provide some details about which pathogens have a human vs animal host.
- Regarding "There are no FDA approved antivirals for HRV, CV, EV, Echovirus, HAV or adenoviruses." A vaccine is currently available for HAV as mentioned in 60.40.170, please update.
- Please establish a plan to offer the Hepatitis A (HAV) vaccine to personnel involved in this study, with a declination form available for individuals who choose not to receive the vaccine.
Title: “Functional genomics of Babesia parasites”. Major modification.
NIH Guidelines: Sections III-D-1a, III-F-8, and Appendix C-II.
Meeting Comments: The modification expands the scope of the research to include in vivo studies. The previously approved project focused on the use of a gene-editing system to investigate essential gene functions in Babesia parasites. Parasites will be cultured in vitro using human or cattle red blood cells obtained from commercial vendors to identify and characterize exported proteins and the molecular machinery required for protein export. The project does not meet DURC/P3CO criteria, and appropriate biosafety procedures and mitigation plans are in place.
- Please update to include a justification for the request, as indicated.
- Please include details about the use of the mouse model for propagation.
Other Business: Incident reports; Protocol ID: 2152 updates and off-schedule meeting.
