Mythical magic takes over McCain Auditorium on Jan. 15 with 'Hadestown'

In a production of the musical Hadestown, a Black man in a gray suit holds a black umbrella onstage with a character on each side of him. In the background, various dancers and musicians are shown performing. Yellow and blue stage lights shine down from above.

Kansas State University's McCain Performance Series is kicking off the new year with Anaïs Mitchell's "Hadestown," a vibrant musical retelling of two classic myths, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, 2026.

Experience the musical journey to the underworld and back at McCain Auditorium in a show that intertwines two Greek romantic tragedies — the story of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and the tale of King Hades and his wife Persephone.

"Hadestown" invites audiences into a world where a song can change your fate. Created by celebrated singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell and original director Rachel Chavkin, the critically acclaimed mythical musical won eight Tony Awards in 2019, including Best Musical, and the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album in 2020.

Mitchell's enchanting melodies and Chavkin's poetic vision pit industry against nature, doubt against faith and fear against love. Performed by a vibrant ensemble of actors, dancers and singers, "Hadestown" is a haunting yet hopeful theatrical experience that will captivate audiences from start to finish. Recommended for ages 8+.
