2014 College of Engineering Achievements

• By design: Senior in chemical engineering receives the A. McLaren White Award for his first-place entry in the national student design competition sponsored by the American Institute for Chemical Engineers.

• Powerful honor: Two seniors in electrical engineering earn Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Power and Energy Society Scholarship Plus Initiative awards.

• American Concrete Institute awards fellow status to Kimberly Kramer, architectural engineering and construction science professor.

• On system: Architectural engineering team wins at international competition for second year in a row.

Fred Hasler, associate professor of architectural engineering and construction science, is the winner of the Presidential Award from the Illuminating Engineering Society in recognition of his exemplary efforts in support of the society.

Ryan Whelchel, senior in architectural engineering, received the Fred R. Havens American Institute of Steel Construction Scholarship for the 2014-15 academic year.

• Supercomputing honor: Daniel Andresen, associate professor of computing and information sciences and director of the Institute for Computational Research in Engineering and Science, named member of key national supercomputing leadership team.

• Best new research: R&D Magazine has recognized a K-State engineering team with a 2014 R&D 100 Award for developing a lithium-based neutron detector.

• Crop saver: K-State research irrigation engineer Freddie Lamm earns honor for his extensive research and education on subsurface drip irrigation for field crops from the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers.

LaVerne Bitsie-Baldwin, director of the College of Engineering's multicultural engineering program, is the Midwest Region INROADS Educator of the Year.
 
Bette Grauer, assistant dean of retention, diversity and inclusion in the College of Engineering, receiving the American Society for Engineering Education Midwest Section's 2014 Outstanding Service Award.

• Steve Starrett, associate professor of civil engineering, is elected vice president of the Environmental and Water Resources Institute, the largest technical institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

• The Robotics Team is again the winner of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers' annual student robotics design. In fact, since the competition began in 2007, the Kansas State University team has claimed the championship each year.

• A two-person team from K-State won Best Overall Project and Employees Choice Video awards at the national Student Infrared Imaging Competition in Melbourne, Florida, June 27-28.

• Three-time awardee: Freddie Lamm, professor of biological and agricultural engineering, earns honors from the American Society for Agricultural and Biological Engineers.

• Outstanding contributions in advancing recruitment and retention of women in IEEE and the engineering professions earns Noel Schulz prestigious IEEE Education Society Hewlett-Packard Harriet B. Rigas Award.

• The university's Center for Information and Systems Assurance has been redesignated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance/Cyber Defense Research.

• For the 16th time in the last 17 years, K-State's quarter-scale tractor team has won or finished in the top three at the International Quarter-Scale Tractor Student Design Competition.

• Professor Gurdip Singh is lending his expertise in computing and information science to the National Science Foundation for the next two years as a program director.

• A K-State civil engineering professor will serve as a visiting fellow at the University of New South Wales.

Andrew Bernica, May 2014 bachleor's graduate in civil engineering, has earned two scholarships from the American Concrete Institute, or ACI, in support of his graduate studies.

• For the fourth year in a row, the K-State chapter of Eta Kappa Nu electrical and computer engineering honor society is among the nation's best.

• Architectural engineering student Ryan Whelchel earns $7,000 fellowship from the American Concrete Institute.

• An essay by biological systems engineering student Emma Brace places third in a national competition.

Behrooz Mirafzal, electrical and computer engineering, earns a National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development, or CAREER, award for his proposal, "Toward Grid-Interactive Converters with Diagnostic, Remedial, and Lifetime Prognostic Features for the Next Generation of Power Grids."

Hayder Rasheed, civil engineering, is serving a two-year term on the American Concrete Institute's awards for papers subcommittee SC3, Chester Paul Siess Award for Excellence in Structural Research.

• The American Concrete Institute honors K-State's student chapter with the institute's Award for Student Activities.

• The Council for International Exchange of Scholars has commended Sunanda Dissanayake, associate professor of civil engineering, for her service on the engineering peer review committee, which completed the merit review of Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program applicants for the 2014-2015 year.
