2010 Student Groups Achievements

* K-State's student chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architects earned fourth place in the organization's recent Student Design Competition in Boston. For the competition, teams had to optimize the renovation of an existing community center and community garden in the Boston area. Dec. 2010

* A team of K-State computer science students put their knowledge of computer systems and programming to the test to take third place in the Supercomputing 10 Student Programming Competition. The event, in New Orleans, gave five-member teams a day -- from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. -- to find solutions to a set a problems. Some of the problems required programming knowledge, some required systems knowledge and some required knowledge outside of computer science, according to Dan Andresen, associate professor of computing and information sciences and team coach. Dec. 2010

* A K-State student team took second place at the International Leadership Association Case Study Competition, Oct. 25-30, in Boston. The competition lets students analyze a real-world situation and make recommendations based on the information presented. The event includes a written brief, poster session and an oral presentation. Nov. 2010

* K-State at Salina’s Flight Team is headed to the national SAFECON competition in May 2011 after taking second place at the Region VI competition. The team won several awards, including the Safety Award, which is given to one team that demonstrates safety in all aspects of the competition. The team also placed first overall in flying events and fifth overall in ground events. SAFECON competitions feature flight events and ground events that test the teams' abilities in all aspects of flight. Contestants placing in the top 20 in each event earn points for their team. The results of each event contribute to the teams' overall scores. Region VI includes teams from Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas. Oct. 2010

* K-State's chapter of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity earned the Pyramid of Excellence award as one of the fraternity's best chapters in the nation. The honor was presented to only seven chapters in 2010. The award is the highest achievement a chapter of the fraternity can earn. Oct. 2010

* K-State's chapter of The National Society of Collegiate Scholars has received the society's Bronze STAR status. The chapter was recognized at the national society's 2010 Leadership Summit, a training event for current and prospective chapter officers. The K-State chapter was recognized with the award for its program success, community service, member engagement and on-campus involvement. Oct. 2010

* For the seventh time in the last eight years, K-State's chapter of Mortar Board, the national senior honor society, has been named one of the best in the nation. K-State was one of only 22 chapters to receive Mortar Board's Golden Torch Award. To earn the honor, the chapter was deemed to be superb, well-run and exceeding the minimum standards, accomplishing significant achievements in chapter management and contributing meaningful service to K-State. Sept. 2010

* K-State at Salina's Students In Free Enterprise team remains the Walgreen's Wrangle grand champions for the second year running. The team won the 2010 business case competition Sept. 16-18 at Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia, Ark. K-State Salina also was the 2009 champion at the event. Sept. 2010

* For the third year in a row and the fourth time in the last five years, Kansas State University's Black Student Union is the best in the Big 12 Conference. Two K-State Black Student Union members received honors for their service and leadership. Marcus Bragg, freshman in industrial engineering, Kansas City, Kan., was named the most outstanding freshman, and Deborah Muhwezi, senior in mass communications, Wichita, the most outstanding senior. Sept. 2010

* K-State students won the Collegiate Quiz Bowl in San Antonio during the 2010 Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show. The contest helps develop future beef industry leaders and provides students an opportunity to be a part of the convention. The Collegiate Quiz Bowl was sponsored by a grant from The Farm Credit System Foundation, as well as the National Cattlemen’s Foundation.  Team members were Anna Pesta, Hyatt Frobose, Thomas Wilson and Clement Neely. Ken Odde is faculty adviser. K-State bested Penn State University in the final of the double-elimination competition. Teams earned the right to compete in the 2010 Beef Quiz Bowl by winning their section of the American Society of Animal Science Academic Quadrathalon in 2009.  Jan. 2010
