2009 Business Administration Achievements
* K-State is the recipient of the 2009 Creative Use of Technology Award from Association for Continuing Higher for K-State's Distance Learning Video Gallery. The gallery is a project by Roger McHaney, professor and interim head of the department of management. It is a collection of video interviews with seasoned K-State instructors who are active in distance education. It provides tips and techniques for improvement, efficiency and success for K-State faculty and staff and those from other institutions seeking knowledge on distance learning best practices. * K-State's master of business administration program ranks among the Global 100 best in the Aspen Institute's Beyond Grey Pinstripes biennial survey and alternative rankings. Nearly 150 schools from around the world vied for a position in the top 100. K-State is the only university in Kansas to make the cut. K-State's program ranked second in the Big 12 and sixth among all land grant universities. Overall, K-State ranked No. 77 in the world, ahead of such schools as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Tulane. Moreover, in a separate ranking of graduate faculty research related to social, environmental and ethical issues in business, K-State ranked No. 1 in the Big 12 and No. 29 in the world. Oct. 2009
* Thomas A. Wright, K-State's Jon Wefald Leadership Chair in Business Administration, was recently named a Fellow by the American Psychological Association. To become a Fellow, individuals must have made outstanding contributions to the field of psychology and that person's work must have had national impact on the field of psychology. In addition to the American Psychological Association, Wright is a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology and the Association for Psychological Science. He is the first K-State scholar to achieve Fellow status in each of these three prestigious professional organizations, an honor thought to belong to only about 80 people worldwide. Oct. 2009
* According to recently released 2008 uniformed certified public accounting exam results, K-State ranks seventh nationally on passing rates for one section of the four-part test taken by first-time candidates with advanced degrees. Nearly 86 percent of these K-State graduates passed the exam's regulation section, said Richard Ott, head of the K-State department of accounting and the Grant Thornton Faculty Fellow. K-State also is tied for ninth nationally in the percentage of all candidates with advanced degrees passing the exam. K-State had a 70 percent passing rate in 2008. Sept. 2009

* K-State is using a special $50,000 grant to expand university efforts for the retention and academic success of Latino students. JohnElla Holmes, coordinator of multicultural recruitment and retention for the College of Arts and Sciences, and Dawne Martin, assistant to the dean for diversity at the College of Business Administration, are the recipients of a 2009 Semillas grant, funded by the Walmart Foundation. K-State is one of only 20 institutions to receive the grant, which is part of the nonprofit organization Excelencia in Education's "Growing What Works" national initiative to refine and replicate model education programs to advance Latino student achievement at two-year and four-year colleges. Semillas is the Spanish word for seeds. Holmes and Martin will use the grant for Semillas de Excelencia Learning Communities, a program that expands and extends a current K-State program for recruitment and retention of Latino students to now include Latino freshmen experiences and learning communities. * An article co-written by K-State's Chwen Sheu, professor of management, received the Indiana University CIBER Best International Collaboration Paper Award. "The Effects of Environmental Regulations on Global Supply Chain Management: Transaction Cost Analysis" was recognized with the top best paper honor at the third International Conference on Operations and Supply Chain Management, July 28 to Aug.5. Sheu's paper was one of only two that received the honor. Sept. 2009

* A K-State senior is getting a behind-the-scenes view of a popular and awarding-winning daytime TV talk show. Julie Shuss, senior in marketing, Leawood, was selected as a summer intern for the "Rachael Ray Show," which is based in New York City. June 2009
* K-State's Master's in Business Administration Case Competition Team earned second place among Big 12 schools at the Big 12 Master's in Business Administration Case Competition, April 2-4.The students were given an original, live case provided by DMX, a company offering music, image and messaging services to businesses. In less than 24 hours, each team was asked to come up with both short-term and long-term strategies in areas including marketing, finance and operations. The teams then prepared a presentation containing detailed recommendations for the company. Team member Katie Matthew also was recognized with awards for Most Valuable Player and Best Q&A. May 2009
* The K-State Students in Free Enterprise team advanced to the 2009 national championship by winning the Students in Free Enterprise USA Regional Competition April 3 in Dallas, Texas. The team will seek a national championship at the 2009 SIFE USA National Exposition, May 10-12, in Philadelphia, Pa. Participants in SIFE use business concepts to develop community outreach projects that improve the quality of life and standard of living for people in need. At SIFE competitions, teams present the results of their projects and are evaluated by business leaders serving as judges. During the school year, the K-State SIFE team organized 12 projects in the Manhattan community. The projects included the Global Xchange Game, where SIFE members taught market economics to sixth-graders at Bluemont Elementary; conducting financial literary seminars at area high schools; and offering "McCain Munchies," concessions at McCain Auditorium events. * The Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology named Thomas Wright, K-State's Jon Wefald Leadership Chair in Business Administration, a Fellow of the society. This makes Wright the first K-State faculty member to have been named a Fellow of both the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology and the Association for Psychological Science, an honor he received in 2007. Society Fellows are distinguished industrial and organizational psychologists who have made unusual and outstanding contributions to the field. March 2009
