1976 February 15 Referendum to build Rec Complex: 71% of over 5,500 voting students agree to pay $12 per student per semester to build the Rec Complex.
1980 October 3 Rec Complex opens with 96,000 square feet; cost is $3.5 million.
1985 April 12 Rec Complex is dedicated and named in honor of Dr. Chester E. Peters upon his retirement as vice president of student affairs.
1987 through 1989 Rec Services Council discusses the need for Rec Complex expansion.
1989 Spring Needs assessment survey is completed with assistance from Planning and Evaluation Services.
1990 May 2 Preliminary report from expansion task force is given to Student Senate. Rec Services Council approves $5,000 expenditure for consulting architect to develop preliminary plans and cost estimates.
1990 September 20 RS Council approves architect study. Academic and University Relations Committee of Student Senate writes senate bill. Referendum proposal is to use $22.25 (re-direct monies being collected for the Rec Complex, football stadium, and Union) to retire bonds and 3.00 increase in RS operational budget.
1990 October 30-31 Referendum is held in conjunction with student government elections. Referendum does not pass with not enough students voting. 57% of those voting were in favor of the Rec Complex expansion. (Note: "Re-organization" of the university was announced on October 30 and resulted in marches and protests on the 31st.)
1991 February 12 Rec Complex Expansion Review Committee begins meetings. Decides original work of the Task Force and feasibility study are still relevant and necessary.
1991 Fall Student Senate again establishes referendum for Rec Complex expansion and also includes Hale Library expansion. Rec Complex proposal is to re-direct $22.25 already being collected for Rec Complex, football stadium, and Union to the Rec Complex expansion project ($20 to retire bonds, $2 to operational budget, and $.25 to a repair/replacement reserve). Total project to include Rec Complex expansion, lighting and underground irrigation of play fields, establishing permanent softball infields and backstops to include bathrooms, service building, etc., re-surface of tennis courts and upgrade of tennis court lighting.
1991 November 5-6 Referendum passes with 81% of the 5,445 students voting in favor of Rec Complex expansion.
1991 November 14 Materials to Board of Regents for approval.
1992 May 9 Project passes state legislature.
1992 September 29 Kickoff meeting with architect.
1993 September 2 Successful bid opening for general contractor. Bids come in low enough to pick up add-on alternates.
1993 October Tennis court surface and lighting project completed.
1993 October 19 First construction meeting on site and contractor moving equipment.
1995 Fall Expanded/renovated Rec Complex opens with 177,000 square feet.
1996 April 14 Peters Recreation Complex awarded "Facility of Distinction" from National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association.
1997 November 18 RS Council votes to approve feasibility study for an aquatics center addition to the Rec Complex. $5,000 taken from reserve account for this purpose.
1997 May 7 RS Council approves an additional $4,800 for the feasibility study for an aquatics center.
1999 September 29 Feasibility study for aquatics center completed and presented to RS Council.
2000 January 27 RS Council votes to not move forward on the aquatics center proposal due to costs.
2006 Fall Student Senate establishes Long-Term Strategies Committee for the Rec Complex. Committee to study and assess future needs of student body in relation to Rec Complex.
2007 Spring Committee distributes survey to student body population to assess status of needs. Student Senate proposes and approves funding a feasibility study for expansion of the Rec Complex.
2007 Summer Architects, students, and Rec Services staff meet in plan development.
2007 September 14 Student Review Committee meets with architect to review master planning concept.
2007 September 26 Deliver final master planning concept floor plans and elevations.
2007 October 11 Master planning design placed on server. Promotions campaign begins.
2007 October 17 Master planning computer animation received and placed on server.
2007 November 13 Student referendum.
