The first four minutes are critical
To be “not seen” is a wretched experience. To be effective, we may have to overcome these rituals of indifference.

If we have not met Friends before, the first four minutes of the initial contact are critical for establishing the tempo and tone of the relationship.

Friends will form an impression of us during those first moments that will have consequences for our effectiveness. Think of the Threshold as a sort of "test." Friends will be thinking, "Does this person really care? Is she really interested in my experience? Can I trust her?"

First impressions are difficult to shake off.
