For students in M.A., M.S., Ph.D., and professional programs at Kansas State University.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:

The Women’s Studies Program offers a graduate certificate for Women’s Studies students and for students who are enrolled in various M.A., M.S., Ph.D. and other graduate programs. The Women’s Studies Graduate Certificate can be pursued independently or by students who are enrolled in any graduate program at K-State or at other universities.

COURSE OF STUDY

Graduate certificate work consists of completing 12 hours of graduate-level courses. To complete the Graduate Certificate in Women’s Studies, all students are required to take WOMST 810, “Gender: Interdisciplinary Perspectives in Feminist Thought and Practice.” This semester-long class must be taken at KSU’s Manhattan campus. Students choose three other courses from an approved list of interdisciplinary and disciplinary electives. A limited number of electives are available through distance education. Women’s Studies graduate faculty members serve on M.A., M.S., doctoral, and other academic committees of Graduate Certificate students.

ADMISSION INFORMATION

There are different application procedures for a) students who are currently enrolled in a graduate program at K-State, and for domestic students who have finished a K-State graduate degree, and for b) all other graduate students, with undergraduate degrees, who are applying to the Women’s Studies Graduate Certificate Program.
Currently enrolled KSU graduate students should apply directly to the Graduate Coordinator, Women’s Studies Program, 3 Leasure Hall, Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS 66506. Please send Women’s Studies the following: 1) a copy of official undergraduate and graduate transcripts (if you are enrolled in another K-State graduate program, unofficial graduate transcripts are sufficient); and 2) a letter of application with three references, which includes a description of previous work and current interests in the discipline and a list of approved Women’s Studies courses that you would like to take. In addition, if you are enrolled in another K-State graduate program, the student’s major professor should sign this letter of application or write a separate letter indicating of her/his approval of the student’s plans to pursue the Women’s Studies Graduate Certificate.
If you are applying from outside of K-State graduate programs to the Women’s Studies Graduate Certificate Program, you will send your application materials directly to Dean Carol Shanklin, Graduate School, 103 Fairchild Hall, Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS 66506. In addition to transcripts and a letter of application, 3) complete the non-degree graduate certificate application on the Graduate School’s website. Click on “online application” on the left side of the home page and follow application guidelines instructions for U.S. and international students. Then 4) send a copy of the online application to the Graduate School and print, sign, and send Women’s Studies the print-out portion of the online application. 5) If you are an international student who will be applying for a visa, contact the Women’s Studies Program and develop a formal plan of study that is approved by the Women’s Studies Graduate Certificate Coordinator; this plan of study will be submitted to the Graduate School as part of your application materials. 6) For those international students whose primary language is not English, include a TOEFL language proficiency document with your application.
Achievement tests scores are not needed. And there is no fee for applying to a graduate certificate program. If you have any questions, please call the Women’s Studies Program or the Graduate School.
