In 2011, former President Kirk Schulz launched an ambitious initiative — to make Kansas State University a Top 50 public research university by 2025. On the surface, this challenge may have seemed insurmountable. However, as the nation's first operational land-grant university, we knew our commitment to service could make this vision a reality.

Since then, President Richard Myers has been handed the 2025 torch and remains dedicated to K-State 2025's mission, vision and goals. This includes seven thematic goals that hone in on the individual aspects that make the university exceptional, as well as eight common elements that weave the vision together. Explore the K-State 2025 visionary plan as a whole and you'll quickly learn that while the ultimate goal is research-focused, its roots extend to every aspect of the K-State experience.

In the meantime, the most important thing to note about K-State 2025 is its progress. For six years, everyone from university leadership to faculty to students has held themselves accountable for making the initiative possible. We have fostered collaborative partnerships with communities and industry, established four USAID Feed the Future labs, created an impactful first-year experience program, and encouraged diversity and inclusion, among many other accomplishments.

As we welcome the 2017 year, we also celebrate being one year closer to realizing our K-State 2025 goal, and 150-plus years of putting service first. That's the #WildcatWay.
