Cats' Cupboard

The Cats' Cupboard is a collaborative effort among students, faculty, staff, and community focused on promoting food security for individuals at K-State.  This initiative aims to provide direct food access through an on-campus food pantry, in addition to education and engagement opportunities.  The food pantry will be accessible to all K-State students.

Cats' Cupboard Mission

Providing access to nutritious food and support through initiatives that promote community, health, success, and wellbeing.

Guiding Principles

  1. WE believe access to nutritious food is a basic human right.
  2. WE respect the dignity of every human being.
  3. WE collaborate to effect change and support student success.
  4. WE practice good stewardship of knowledge and resources.
Evidence of this need

In the Campus Climate Assessment Project, 39.4% of the students who reported financial hardship indicated they had difficulty affording food, and this finding has been supported through alternative quantitative and qualitative data collected by various campus entities.  In a Financial Stress study conducted by the Office of Student Life, 14% of students respondents indicated they did not have enough money to meet their basic necessities.  Furthermore, 51% indicated they didn't have enough money for groceries at least once in the three preceding months.

Cats' Cupboard Vision

Our vision is to prevent food insecurity from being a barrier to student success.  In order to do this, we will commit to building awareness and the capacity of our campus community to address this challenge from a holistic perspective.  A pantry with healthy and accessible food will be essential for this vision, but we do not want to limit our vision to only opening a pantry.

We see the potential for this initiative to have a direct tie with our academic programs as we provide an active learning place for many disciplines that work directly with the issue of food security.  This collaborative effort of student life and academia will lead the way for practicing real change and enhancing K-State's land-grant mission.
