Early Pregnancy Diagnosis, Fetal Sexing and Reproductive Tract Evaluation of Beef Cattle

This course will focus on the use of ultrasound for the evaluation of bovine pregnancies and the ovaries of non-pregnant cows. Goals of the course are to demonstrate the potential uses of ultrasound for accurate early pregnancy evaluation and fetal aging, fetal sex determination, and evaluation of ovarian structures. Participants will have the opportunity to use the equipment to gain first-hand experience obtaining and interpreting ultrasound images of the bovine reproductive tract.

Cow-Calf Ration Planning-Introductions to the BrANDS Software Program

Advising clients about the most cost-effect supplement plans for beef cows consuming standing dormant forage or harvested hay as well as creating diets for growing heifers or bulls are important services for veterinarians to offer their cow-calf clients. An excellent resource is the BRNADS software package offered by Iowa State University. In this hands-on lab, we will review beef cow nutrition and introduce the BRANDS software.

Reconstructive Skin Surgical Proccedures

In this laboratory, advanced methods of skin closure for large defects will be covered and participants will be able to practice the techniques on cadavers.  The focus will be on local and axial pattern flaps.  A brief overview of the challenges and techniques utilized in skin reconstruction will be presented at the beginning of the laboratory.
