The Urban Water Institute addresses the challenges of a sustainable and secure water supply for the future by enhancing K-State's and its partners' research and development activities related to water-related challenges and opportunities in urban and urbanizing areas. This is accomplished through cross-disciplinary and cross-jurisdictional collaborations with industry, municipalities, government agencies and non-profits to conduct research, develop new technologies, promote public policy and provide high-quality education.
The Urban Water Institute has two laboratories on the K-State Olathe campus dedicated to research/development and extension/outreach. Currently, Dr. Saugata Datta is leading research in emerging contaminants in water and the effects of carbon dioxide sequestration in the research lab. The Urban Water Institute hosts professionals, teachers and K-12 students in the labs through workshops and internships.
