Connecting to your site

In order to publish or edit pages on the web through Contribute, you must set up a connection. Once Contribute has been launched, click the Create a connection button on the left. If you have already made a connection, choose it on the left. You may use Contribute to edit multiple websites; additional sites you make connections to will appear on the left.

The Create Connection dialog box will open, displaying the Introduction section. Unless an administrator has sent you a connection key (if you have never heard of a connection key you most likely don't have one), click Continue to move on.

In this section, you will enter the URL of your website.

Leave the first box set to Website. In the second box, input the address for your specific website's homepage. Most likely, your address will start with http://www.k-state.edu/.

After this, you should type the folder on the K-State server your files will be published into, shown as yoursite/ below. This will cause your homepage to be the first page displayed when you access the website through your connection.

If you are setting up a connection in order to create a new version of your old site, you may wish to publish into a folder named something other than your current website (you will define this path a few steps later). CNS can make another folder on the server for you to publish into, such as yoursite-new/, which can then be changed to overwrite your old site. Using this method, your old website would still be in place for users to browse until your new site is fully created.

Click Continue.

Choose Secure FTP (SFTP) from the list in the next box.

Three boxes should appear. In the first box, enter "unix.k-state.edu." In the second and third boxes, enter your K-State eID and password.

Click Continue.

If an error message says, "Contribute could not connect because the server is down or not accepting connections," make sure you chose SFTP instead of FTP.

Next you will need to enter the path to your folder on the K-State server. Most likely this will be "/usr/local/data/www/yourfoldername", but it may not be for your specific site. Contact your administrator to find out the information.

Click Continue.

If an error message says, "Contribute cannot verify your connection information," it is because you do not have permissions for the site.

How to change your permissions

Enter your first and last name, in addition to your e-mail address.

Click Continue.

Next choose your role. The majority of users will be Publishers, but choose the role your department has assigned you. The descriptions of each role can be viewed by clicking on each, so if you aren't sure just choose the one you believe suits you best. If you choose the wrong role, don't worry; your administrator will change it for you.

Click Continue.
