The linking rules: a summary

Link to a page not contained within the website

  1. Select the link object or text.
  2. Hit the Link button.
    Select Browse to Web Page.
  3. In the Insert Link dialog box, type the entire address in the Web address (URL) box.
    Examples:
    To an index.htm page,
    http://www.k-state.edu
    To a page other than an index page, the page must end in its full title, .htm or .html,
    https://www.k-state.edu/admit/request.html
  4. Set the Target frame box to "New Window" to ensure the page opens in a new browser window, rather than replacing your own website.

Link to an index page within the website

  1. Select the link object or text.
  2. Hit the Link button.
    Select Browse to Web Page.
  3. Under the Advanced options in the HREF box, type a back slash and the name of the folder it is contained in.
    Example:
    /apply
  4. Leave the Target frame box set to "Default," ensuring a new window does not open.

Link to a page within the same folder as the page being linked from

  1. Select the link object or text.
  2. Hit the Link button.
    Select Browse to Web Page.
  3. Under the Advanced options in the HREF box, type the name of the file.
    Example:
    ged.htm
  4. Leave the Target frame box set to "Default," ensuring a new window does not open.

Link to a page other than an index page from a page in a different folder

  1. Select the link object or text.
  2. Hit the Link button.
    Select Browse to Web Page.
  3. Under the Advanced options in the HREF box, type a back slash and the name of the folder the file is contained in, then type another back slash and the name of the file.
    Example:
    /admissions/ged.htm
  4. Leave the Target frame box set to "Default," ensuring a new window does not open.

Link to the homepage

  1. Select the link object or text.
  2. Hit the Link button.
    Select Browse to Web Page.
  3. Under the Advanced options in the HREF box, type a back slash and index.htm or index.html.
    Example:
    /index.htm
  4. Leave the Target frame box set to "Default," ensuring a new window does not open.

Note: Never make webpages in folders deeper than one level from the template folder, or they may not display correctly on the web.

If the website is contained in http://consider.k-state.edu, the templates are located in http://consider.k-state.edu/templates. The left navigation heads (on Consider: Apply, Admissions, Financial aid, Tuition and costs, etc.) should be folders with index pages inside (http://consider.k-state.edu/apply, http://consider.k-state.edu/admissions, http://consider.k-state.edu/financialaid, etc.).

Subheads of these topics should be pages inside the folder of their respective heads

Link to a .pdf download

  1. Upload the .pdf file to the folder you wish it to be in through a secure FTP (SFTP) program such as Fetch.
  2. Select the link object or text.
  3. Hit the Link button.
    Select Browse to Web Page.
  4. Under the Advanced options in the HREF box type the path, just like linking to a page.
    If the .pdf is in the same folder as the page being linked from, simply type in the name.
    filename.pdf
    If the pdf is in a subfolder, type in the path with the folder name.
    /majorslist/Anthropology.pdf
  5. Leave the Target frame box set to "Default," ensuring a new window does not open.

Link to e-mail address

  1. Select the link object or text.
  2. Hit the Link button.
    Select E-Mail Address from the menu.
     


     
  3. Type the address in the E-mail address box. The words "mailto:" should appear in the HREF box in the advanced options.
