business cards

The purpose of the business card is to locate you within the university, providing information so people can write, call, or visit you. The purpose of the business card is also to note your affiliation with Kansas State University, not with other organizations.

Business cards are the most complex of the stationery elements. In order to communicate effectively, use only the most essential information.

To accommodate more information that some cards may require because of the addition of fax numbers, e-mail addresses, and unit and personal URLs, two card styles are available.

1. The standard business card size.

2. A foldover version for those individuals who want to include the maximum allowable information, including more than one title, office and home phone, fax, e-mail, department and personal homepage address. This version of the business card costs approximately twice as much as the standard size card because of larger paper, printing on two sides, and folding costs.

Subject to your office's or department's budgetary constraints, any individual may select the foldover business card.

Current costs on the options are available from K-State Printing Services.

Items permitted on the business card, which must appear in this order:

Column 1

1. Your name and degree designation, such as Ph.D., MFA, PE. This is the only line that appears in boldface type: 9/10 Futura bold. All other lines appear in 8/10 Futura, without bold or italics.

2. If you have more than one title, you may put all your titles on the business card; however, you must choose only one mailing address.

3. Department or office name.

Column 2

A maximum of 8 lines may appear in this column on the standard business card.

4. The street address, including the room numbers and the building name. See item 3 in the letterhead section for the order of elements in the address.5. The city, state, and zip code, including your zip plus-four designation.

6. Phone number. You may put both your office and home phone numbers on your card. If you do so, they should appear on separate lines preceded by Office and Home.

Optional elements

7. Fax number. This should be labeled Fax.

8. E-mail address. To maintain the parallelism of elements and because not all people outside the university environment are familiar with this address format, your e-mail address should be labeled E-mail.

9. Department or unit homepage address. Because of the length of many URLs, you not need label this address. You may also choose to drop the http:// from your address.

10. Personal homepage address. You may put both your unit and personal homepage addresses on your business card.

No other elements or copy may appear on the K-State business card.
