University General Education: Programs

K-State undergraduates share a similar, but not necessarily the same, general education experience. With the guidance of their academic advisors, students are encouraged to explore the diversity of expertise at Kansas State University.

Each undergraduate college establishes a program for University General Education. Use the UGE Programs tab above to access descriptions of the UGE Program for each undergraduate college at K-State.

These UGE programs meet three conditions:

  1. An assurance that the college's University General Education program provides breadth.
The provision for breadth introduces students to the excitement of learning for intrinsic, aesthetic, political, social, practical, or personal reasons not necessarily connected to competence in a field of study or to success in a career. Conceived as an ally to specialized study, UGE programs complement study in depth by helping students to explore new and different explanations about the complexity, connectedness and beauty of their world.

  2. Selection of at least eighteen credits from a pool of approved University General Education courses/experiences.
The University General Education plan places a University-wide requirement of at least eighteen credits on each undergraduate degree curriculum. Colleges, departments, and individual students may choose to extend general education studies beyond the University's minimum requirement.

  3. Distribution of at least one-third of University General Education credits at the upper division level (300 and above).
The University General Education plan encourages general education study across most, if not all, of the undergraduate years. Thus, at least one-third of students' UGE programs must be upper division courses/experiences approved for UGE credit.
