Dance and Music Courses for K-State Credit

These courses are offered for credit through the Division of Continuing Education with the cooperation of various Kansas State University departments. Fees for these classes differ depending on special instructor and equipment needs. Students may view the recreational credit classes that are available and then move on to the iSIS site for enrollment. Link to Credit Class Policies.
Fees in addition to the base credit hour fee generally apply in order to cover other costs associated with offering the courses.
Dance Classes Available
Ballroom Dance, Middle East Dance, Swing and Salsa, Dance Conditioning
Ballroom Dance I — DANCE-599
Introduction to the principles of ballroom dancing. Includes dance terminology, dance position, correct body alignment and positions, and partnering. Techniques such as open and close positions, leading and following, and a variety of steps will be emphasized. The jitterbug, American waltz, foxtrot, and Latin steps will be taught.

Middle Eastern Dance (Belly Dance)
This dance technique course will cover beginning level Middle Eastern dance movements, including hip and rib cage isolations, arm and hand movements, turns, traveling steps, percussive body movements, veil work, stage dynamics, combinations, and choreography. Students will also be introduced to the fundamentals of Middle Eastern music and rhythms, history, culture, and costuming, as they apply to the dance. This class is open to both men and women, however all students are expected to participate.
Please wear comfortable clothing that allows for ease of movement. Form-fitting clothing allows you and the instructor to check for proper alignment and technique. Footwear: bare feet, ballet slippers, or dance sandals.

Swing & Salsa Dance
This is an intermediate course on swing dancing that emphasizes technique and style of Jitterbug, Lindy, and West Coast swing. The emphasis will be on partnering and rhythmic articulation. Demonstrations, performances, and videos will supplement the course.
Prerequisites: Ballroom Dance 1 or a minimum of 6 months of social level dance classes or significant training in Ballet, Jazz, or Modern dance is strongly recommended before entering this swing and salsa dance course.

Dance Conditioning
A varied and challenging class, Dance Conditioning is based on the fundamental elements that professional dancers use in their everyday training. The lessons will be as beneficial to the aspiring dancer as to someone wanting the benefits of a structured exercise regimen. The training provides a great overall workout, including exercises that tone and strengthen, exercises for balance, and exercises for movement and agility. You will become familiar with your won body's strengths and weaknesses, and learn what keeps a dancer healthy in body and mind and able to perform at their personal optimal level.
