Helping Children With Cancer

The Mission of Children's Cancer Charities is to help alleviate the suffering of children with cancer. At local, national and international levels, Tri Deltas offer financial and volunteer contributions to the research and treatment of children with cancer. Children's Cancer Charities encompasses a wide array of charitable organizations. Tri Deltas across the United States and Canada have donated goods, volunteered time and held fund-raisers for the research and treatment of a disease for which 240,000 children are diagnosed each year. Since 1974, Tri Deltas have raised more than $10 million in support of children's cancer hospitals, research facilities and cancer camps.

St. Jude Children's Cancer Research Hospital

St. Jude Children's Cancer Research Hospital, founded by Danny Thomas, treats about 160 patients everyday in an outpatient basis and maintains 56 inpatient beds. It is the first institution established for the sole purpose of conducting basic and clinical research into catastrophic childhood diseases, mainly cancer.

It opened in 1962 and has treated more than 19,000 children from across the United States and 60 foreign countries. The hospital's daily operating costs are approximately $1 million, which are primarily covered by public contributions. For more than 25 years, Delta Delta Delta's philanthropic mission has been to help fight childhood cancer. Tri Deltas have raised more than $10 millions in support of children's cancer hospitals, research facilities and cancer camps.

"We are where some of today's most gifted researchers are able to do more science, more quickly. Where doctors across the world send their toughest cases and most vulnerable patients. Where no one pays for treatment beyond what is covered by insurance, and those without insurance are never asked to pay. We've built America's 3rd-largest health-care charity, with a model that keeps the costs down and the funds flowing, so the science never stops. All patients accepted for treatment at St. Jude are treated without regard to the family's ability to pay."

In November 1999, Tri Delta further enhanced its current philanthropic focus by forming a partnership with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis Tennessee. This partnership allows Tri Delta Chapters to help St. Jude on a national level as well as support traditional philanthropic events for local children's cancer charities. As a chapter, we have events that raise money for St. Jude's so that Tri Delta can reach our national goal of $1 million by the year 2006. This endowment was completed a year early (Jan. 2005). Together with St. Jude, Tri Delta is making a difference.

What has Tri Delta done for St. Jude in the past?

  • Since 1999, Tri Delta has raised more than $2.8 million for St. Jude.
  • In September 2002, Tri Delta agreed to a four-year $1 million endowment for the hospital's Teen Room, which was completed in January 2005.
  • From July 2005-June 2006, Tri Delta members raised more than $1 million for St. Jude.
  • Tri Delta is on of the only national Greek organizations in the country to reach this impressive goal of raising $1 million in a year for their philanthropic partner.

Recent St. Jude News

Tri Delta members have now agreed to a 5-7 year commitment of $7.5 million for the Patient Care Floor in the new Chili's Care Center.

An article from the national Tri Delta website:

10 in 10 for St. Jude

Tri Delta has committed to name the Patient Care Floor in the new Chili's Care Center at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. This commitment is for $10 million over a period of 10 years! All money raised in the 2005-2006 school year, as well as the more than $500,000 over the previous endowment, will count towards the new named gift. So far, Tri Delta members have raised over $2.5 million towards this new named gift opportunity.Eighteen new inpatient rooms in the Chili's Care Center allow the hospital to sustain expected growth rates foreseen over the next five years. This increase can be attributed to a heightened awareness of the life-saving work of St. Jude.

The eighteen new inpatient suites provide:

  • Approximately 30 percent more space in each room
  • An attached parent room containing a window for viewing the patient. For the first time, the parent rooms will include a full bathroom with standing shower
Other features include:
  • The hospital's main pharmacy
  • Two nurse stations
  • Family lounge
  • Education office
  • Teen Room and child life play area

annual Mud Bowl volleyball game.

Community Service BBQ - In the fall, Tri Delta hosts a Community Service BBQ for their neighboring Greek Houses and residential neighbors. Food is provided as well as games for children such as four-square, face painting, and a pie eating contest. Afterwards, Tri Delta members along with members from neighboring fraternities and sororities rake the yards and bag leaves for their residential neighbors.

Easter Egg Hunt - Tri Delta supports Pi Kappa Alpha in their annual Easter Egg Hunt open to the Manhattan community. The event is held at the Pike house and consists of an Easter egg hunt, egg dying, and game such as musical chairs, and face painting. We invite kids from the Manhattan area to come and enjoy activities as a way to give back to the Manhattan community.

Up 'Til Dawn - Every year Tri Delta participates in Up 'til Dawn. We had 15 Up 'til Dawn teams (or 90 people) this year. Since we share the same cause with UTD we always have a good turn out and make an effort to be very involved.

Sincerely Yours - Sincerely Yours is a letter writing campaign done by the women of Tri Delta, very similar to Up ‘Til Dawn’s activities. The women are asked to send out 50 pre-written letters to family and friends asking them for donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. During the letter writing parties, girls participated in sisterhood events such as movie nights and ice cream socials. Girls were also educated about St. Jude’s care facilities, especially the new Chili’s Care Center and Tri Delta care floor; and were also introduced to patients through story cards. October of 2007 was the first year Kansas State’s Tri Delta chapter participated in Sincerely Yours, and so far, we have raised more than 23,000 dollars for St. Jude!!!

3 V 3 Wildcat Shootout - Tri Delta in a partnership with Lambda Chi Alpha sponsors a 3 V 3 soccer tournament called Wildcat Shootout. The tournament, which takes place at Old Stadium in the spring, is open to the entire university and features men’s, women’s and co-ed brackets. The tournament is sponsored by numerous businesses around Manhattan, and donated prizes are awarded to the winning teams. Wildcat Shootout generates between $3,000-4,000, all proceeds benefiting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and The Flint Hills Breadbasket.

And: Each summer Tri Delta members are invited to attend the St. Jude Collegiate Leadership Seminar in Memphis, TN. This seminar is a time for the chapter members to become educated in planning and delegating philanthropy events, using public relations in their community, and to gain leadership training. The seminar also provides hospital tours, patient meet and greets, and education about St. Jude's research and developments. The seminar allows members to bond and share ideas with other Tri Deltas from across the nation.
