Students attend Agriculture Future of America's policy training

Submitted by Logan Britton

Agriculture Future of America hosted 40 college men and women in Washington, D.C., March 17-20, for the AFA Policy Institute. Four of these were students from Kansas State University: Mark Avilla, senior in agricultural communications and journalism; Logan Britton, junior in agricultural economics and agricultural communications and journalism; Jordan Pieschl, sophomore in agricultural communications and journalism and agricultural economics; and John Sachse, senior in animal sciences and industry.

Held in conjunction with Agriculture Council of America's National Ag Day, this institute experience allowed Agriculture Future of America delegates to join Student National Agri- Marketing Association, 4-H and FFA students for National Ag Day activities on Capitol Hill, March 19.

Students took part in training sessions to help further their understanding of policy and regulations in agriculture as well as promote agriculture awareness by visiting with legislators and advisors from the students' home states.

Additionally, the Agriculture Future of America delegate experience was enhanced by institute specific activities March 19-20, which included visits with current and former secretaries of agriculture and a forum featuring leaders in agriculture policy. Students benefited from networking with like-minded students who are passionate about agriculture and the legislative process.

Agriculture Future of America students were able to take part in these activities due to the generosity of Agriculture Future of America Policy Institute and National Ag Day partners. The National Ag Day campaign, hosted by the Agriculture Council of America, encourages every American to understand how food and fiber products are produced, value the essential role of agriculture in maintaining a strong economy and appreciate the role agriculture plays in providing safe, abundant and affordable products.
